In class, we went over the El Nino effect. El Nino in Spanish stands for "the Child". The El Nino is an atmospheric and oceanic disturbance in the ocean. It occurs every seven to fourteen years. It usually around Christmas time. Warm surface waters flow from the central Pacific towards the eastern Pacific. It suppresses the cold, nutrient-rich upwelling of the Humboldt Current off the coast of South America. This disturbance decreases the number of plankton in the ocean which disturbs the food chain. The currents also causes trade winds to reverse its usual course. This brings torrential rain, flooding, and mudslides to the usually dry coastal areas of Peru and Ecuador, and causing monsoons in Asia. The monsoons can cause droughts in Indonesia and Australia.
The El Nino is very dangerous to our world. It can lead to global warming. Scientists are still researching what causes the el nino effect until then we have to think before we act.

Up up and away!
In school we are learned about how kiites fly. We made kites out of construction paper and tried to to fly it. Kites fly because of the air pressure differences. When the air moves quickly over something then the pressure decreases causing the kite to move faster. When the air moves slowly the air pressure increases making the kite move slowly. The forces that make kites fly is the thrust and lift. Thrust is formed by wind, so the speed of wind will affect on how well a kite flies. Lift is formed when the bridle and line from the kite hold it at angle to the wind. The right angle will make the air moves slowly along the face of the kite and pushes it up. Meanwhile, air moves quickly along the back of the kite and it reduces pressure to create lift. Drag is dertimined by the wieght, design and the set of bridle and line on the kite. Drag is formed when gravity is pulled down on the kite. A kite must need more lift then drag to fly but some drag is needed to stay stable.
All this seems pretty intreseting. I mean, who knew that there was so much science behind a kite. But my kite didn't fly because of a very simple reason, there wasn't any wind in the air. I formed a litle wind when i ran so then it flew a little and hit the ground again.
Here is where i found all this information...

Social Studies Advancement Yellow
My parents didn't any computers when they were my age. Instead they had typewritters. That would be hard for me to use because I have a old typewritter downstairs and its really hard for me to work it. If there were no computers we wouldn't be able to go on the computer that would be hard for me since, spend a lot of time on the internet. I wonder how my parents felt without a computer back then.

Deep Krill
Who: Andrew Clarke
Where: British Antarctic Survey based in Cambridge, England
How: Andrew Clarke and some of his colleagues used a remotely operated vehicle that carried a video camera and saw krill feeding on falling plankton. By studying the footage they classified the krill as an classic Antarctic speices, Euphausia superba. They found the Antarctic krill thousand meters below sea level.

"Give Me Some Gum Gum You Dum Dum"
Who: Noutritionists like Gil Leville.
What: Chewing gum can be good for you.
When: April 4, 2007
Where: US and Japan
Why: Gum stimulates the production of saliva causing to help prevent the risk of cavities. It prevents cavities by washing away bacteria. An ingredient called xylitol, which is added to some gums, provides an extra dose of cavity-fighting power. This is good for more than just the teeth. Research suggests that good oral health decreases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other serious diseases.
What I Think: I think that would be cool because it may even help cure cancer. But to much of gum chewing can damage your jaw-joints. It may even be an overdose of vitamins, caffeine, or a medicine.

Omega Meme!!
I’ve tagged students for the Omega Meme!
The rules are as follows:
Each player answers the six questions posted on this blog.
The rules of the game are posted at the beginning before those answers are listed.
At the end of the post, the player then tags 8 people and posts their blog names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog.
Then follow the instructions about adding a page element at omegascience.blogspot.com.
1. My favorite TV show is i don't have one
2. My favorite meal is pizza
3. My favorite nonschool activity is playing tennis because I like running around
4. Someone I look up to is my uncle beacuse he is exciting and nice
5. My goal for the future is to become a doctor
6. In the first hour after school I usually do my homework
I have tagged bluedog13, bluesoccer18
You may not tag someone who has already been tagged.
